There are many legends related to the origins of coffee. Most of them coincide on their place of origin, but the stories differ.
The one story that resonates with the Meza family is the following: According to the legend. A long time ago, in the mountains of Abyssinia, known as modern day Ethiopia, a young shepherd named Kaldi, observed one afternoon that his goats were acting strange. They were jumping and running inexplicably, after having ingested some red fruits from nearby shrub.
The outburst continued for a few days, and at night all the herd seemed to have lost sleep. The goats chased each other and did not stop bleating in unison under the moon.
The pastor, intrigued by what happened, took samples of leaves and fruits to a nearby monastery called Cheodet, where the monks out of curiosity cooked the beans. When they tasted the drink, they found the taste to be foul. They threw away what was left in the bowl into the burning fire. As the beans burned, the monks were overcome by the pleasant aroma that invaded the room. Following the smell, they decided to prepare the drink once more, but this time with the roasted beans. Fascinated by the result, the head of the monastery gave it the name of "Kaaba", which in their language means "precious brown stone".
At midnight, according to the legend, the person in charge of waking the monks to pray, gave each one a few drops of this wonderful elixir to drink. For the first time their prayers were not in a soft and calm voice, but were carried out in chorus with great self-confidence and praise. Since then, a tradition was made that every day at the time of prayer, the monks had a cup of "kaaba," a precious, steaming, scented drink that was sent from above to help them fulfill their spiritual duties.
